Russia initiated aggression against Ukraine in 2014. On February 24, 2022, it started a full-scale military invasion to the Ukrainian territory. This brutal war and military crimes of Russian troops caused a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with thousands civilians killed and millions becoming refuges. As a reaction to this act of aggression, many international companies decided to leave the Russian market, while some others continue doing business there as usual. We track such decisions of companies and urge them to stop funding the war.

The move follows a temporary U.S. sanctions waiver that allowed limited seaborne Russian oil purchases, ending April 11. The purchases mark a strategic shift for Sinopec, which usually sources about half its crude from the Middle East.

Fuchs Petrolub, the world's largest independent lubricant manufacturer, told Lube Report in June 2022 that it “no longer supplies raw materials and finished products to Russia. The local business in Russia operates on a limited basis and products are only produced locally for the Russian market." But the company managed to increase its revenue and profit in 2022 vs 2021.

Still operating in Russia. The Spanish company Maxam, one of the world's largest manufacturers of explosives, continues to manufacture its products in Russia despite EU and US sanctions. In particular, through its division in Uzbekistan, Maxam supplies ammonium nitrate to both Russia and Iran. Revenue significantly (by more than -50%) decreased in 2024 vs 2023. Indian company Ideal Detonators Pvt. Ltd. exported 20 tons of the powerful explosive HMX to Russia in December 2024, despite warnings from the U.S. government. The shipment was intended for Maxam, a Spanish firm controlled by American private equity company Rhone Capital. Documentation confirmed that the cargo was bound for the Russian market, including entities linked to the defense sector. Although Rhone Capital declined to comment, it remains the owner of Maxam, which directly received the HMX shipment. Spain-based Maxam, one of the world’s largest explosives manufacturers, has settled a major debt involving its Russian subsidiary: YUII-Sibir LLC, which supplied explosives to MCC EuroChem JSC. Through a series of transactions that replaced direct settlements between the Russian entities, Spain-based MaxamCorp was able to repay the $11 million it owed to Switzerland-based EuroChem Trading GmbH. Previously, MaxamCorp denied that it continued operations in Russia.

The Dubai company ATS Heavy Equipment & Machinery sold the most parts to Russia. More than 700 deliveries worth more than $40 million were made in just one year. The largest number of spare parts for Boeing and Airbus aircraft went to the Aeroflot group, which, in addition to Aeroflot itself, includes the companies "Russia" and "Pobyeda".
Investigators and journalists uncovered the Catrosa network, companies based in Spain and Russia that used methods to conceal chemical exports to Russia, and found that the Russian importer's clients included well-known weapons developers and agencies linked to Russian intelligence and allegedly involved in the Novichok program. The dual-use chemicals exported included diethylamine, a chemical used in the production of the nerve agent VX.

Amtek is a distributor for Motul east of the Moscow region. They list an extensive network of retail outlets selling Motul products and also offer businesses the chance to sell Motul products on their website.
Despite sanctions and other risks related to business with Russia, many Latvian companies still export to this country. Recently, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) published a list of businesses continuing exports to Russia after the war began. Latvian pharmaceuticals giant Olainfarm is also on the list, whose turnover data for 2022 are not available. Olainfarm sent LTV a plan to enter new markets while emphasizing that it's allowed to export medicines to Russia.
Egypt’s Petrojet company signed a $100 million coast protection deal for the El-Dabaa nuclear plant with the Russian Federation's nuclear power equipment and service exporter Atomstroyexport, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

Xinxiang Richful, which currently meets a significant portion of Russia’s demand, supplies up to 8 million kg of lubricants per month. Richful recently opened an office in Virginia. Blocking it, as well as several smaller suppliers, would create a shortage of mechanical lubricants in Russia, the group says.

Before that, the company belonged to Finnish Tikkurila Oyj. 05.02.2025: JSC "SMARTBUSINESSGROUP" becomes the new founder of the organization LLC "Tikkurila". Global manufacturer of paints and varnishes for packaging Flint Group sold its Russian division Flint Group Vostok LLC to Lakra Sintez, according to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities. The corresponding changes to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities were made in August. Previously, Flint Group Vostok belonged to the German Flint Group Packaging Inks Germany GmbH and the Finnish ANI Holdings Oy Ab. Flint Group and Lakra Sintez did not provide comments.

On August 11, 2023, the MAKROchem Group closed its representative office in Russia. The Management Board of the MAKROchem Group has decided to sell all shares in the subsidiary in Russia by the end of 2023. Aspo Group’s subsidiary Telko has signed a binding framework agreement according to which it will sell the share capital of its Russian subsidiary Telko LLC to Russian industrial operator GK Himik. The purchase price is approximately EUR 9.5 million. Rights to Telko's name and trademarks are not included in the sale. The completion of the transaction requires an approval of the Russian authorities. Aspo's subsidiary Telko completes the sale of its Russian operations.
