Russia initiated aggression against Ukraine in 2014. On February 24, 2022, it started a full-scale military invasion to the Ukrainian territory. This brutal war and military crimes of Russian troops caused a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with thousands civilians killed and millions becoming refuges. As a reaction to this act of aggression, many international companies decided to leave the Russian market, while some others continue doing business there as usual. Still, the Danish stone wool giant vehemently denies having any customer relationship with Russia’s military. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Rockwool has systematically sold ship insulation that has ended up in at least 31 vessels in the Russian navy. Ukraine’s anti-corruption agency has branded Danish insulation giant Rockwool an “international sponsor of war” for continuing to supply its construction materials via intermediaries to various Russian state institutions, including the Ministry of Defense.

The company's main shareholder is Russian oligarch Viktor Budarin, who used his German company as a supplier to the construction industry in Russia. He is not subject to any sanctions.
