Centrus Energy Corp. is an American company that supplies nuclear fuel for use in nuclear power plants and works to develop and deploy advanced centrifuge technology to produce enriched uranium for commercial and government uses, including for national security.
Centrus Energy, a US company specializing in nuclear power, has obtained a waiver from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to import enriched uranium from Russia in 2024 and 2025. This decision is in line with existing contracts with American customers, despite the import ban introduced in response to Russia’ s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, signed by President Joe Biden on May 14, bans imports of enriched uranium into Russia from August 11. However, the law allows derogations until the end of 2027 for nuclear power plant operators with no viable alternative fuel sources, or for imports deemed to be in the national interest.
The US Senate's recent approval of a bill banning imports of Russian low-enriched uranium (LEU) threatens to derail the gradual transition of U.S. commercial uranium enrichment company Centrus Energy back to commercial uranium enrichment. Nuclear fuel supplier Centrus Energy, opens new tab said on Monday it has received a notice from Russia's TENEX that its government passed an order, which canceled its license to export low-enriched uranium to the U.S., effective through Dec. 31, 2025.
